Victory for Lowndes as McLaughlin takes podium for Volvo
Craig Lowndes made it two victories in two races for Triple Eight Race Engineering in the second race of the 2014 V8 Supercars premiere in Adelaide. But all eyes were on the fight between Volvo Polestar Racing driver Scott McLaughlin and reigning champion Jamie Whincup for second.
Lowndes headed the field from pole position as Whincup fought his way past McLaughlin for second place on the first lap. Whincup pitted early but lost valuable time as the pitcrew had problems with the wheel gun on the right rear.
The safety car was issued on lap 12 due to James Courtney losing his left front door after contact with Lee Holdsworth. Lowndes and McLaughlin pitted on the lap when the safety car was issued, with McLaughlin coming out in second position from his stop with Chaz Mostert in third.
Whincup fought his way up to third position and put hard pressure on McLaughlin for second position towards the end of the race. The battle was not to be settled until the last corner on the last lap. The two ran side-by-side for three corners, with Whincup getting ahead into second, but the Holden driver then made a mistake coming in to the last corner, allowing McLaughlin to get back past to score the first V8 Supercars podium finish for Volvo Polestar Racing.
Ford Performance Racing Mark Winterbottom secured fourth position ahead of Brad Jones Racing’s Fabian Coulthard and FPR team-mate Chaz Mostert.
The third and final race of the weekend starts tomorrow at 15.15 local time.
